Callaghan | Destroyer | Sunk by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, 73 miles SW of Okinawa, whilst on picket radar duty. Kamikaze caused major flooding & fires that ignited her AA ammunition, which prevented other ships from approaching to help. She sank later, 47 dead 25.43N 126.55E 28/07/1945 |
Underhill | Destroyer Escort | Torpedoed by Japanese Kaitan human torpedo from submarine I-53, ENE of Luzon, in Philippine Sea. Ship had been diverted to deal with a floating Japanese mine, that turned out to be a dummy diversion tactic. Underhill then made sonar contact with I-53 & launched a depth charge attack along with submarine chaser PC-804. I-53 launched a Kaiten which then attacked Underhill. Underhill attempts to ram the Kaiten, but it hits Underhill on the port side under the bridge. Kaiten disintegrates in a massive explosion destroying the forward part of the ship from the bridge to the bow. The forward part of the ship broke away & quickly sank. After the crew had been rescued the stern section was sunk by gunfire from American sub-chases PC-803, PC-804 & PCE-872, 112 dead, 122 survivors 19.20N 126.42E 24/07/1945. I-53 escaped |

Prichett | Destroyer | Damaged by near miss by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, 73 miles SW of Okinawa, whilst on picket radar duty. She was attempting to help American warship Callaghan, when the Kamikaze missed then crashed into the sea off her port side. Her hull was seriously damaged by the bomb that the Kamikaze was carrying. Her port depth charge racks & superstructure was badly damaged, 25.43N 126.55E 29/07/1945 |
Thatcher | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, whilst in Buckner Bay, off S coast of Okinawa. Kamikaze slipped into the bay & attacked her at anchor. The aircraft bounced off the port side of the ship & crashed into the sea, 2 injured 19/07/1945. Ship remained operational, but she left for survey of her battle damage in the US. Arrived at Bremerton for survey 20/08/1945. Declared constructive total loss 23/11/1945 |
Cassin Young | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa. Kamikaze hit her starboard side amidships. Bomb exploded causing many fires & knocking out her engines. Crew were able to get one engine under control, put out the fires & get underway for Kerama Retto, 22 dead, 45 injured 28/07/1945 |
Rathburne | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze crashed into her port bow at the waterline. Kamikaze caused flooding, knocked out her sound gear & started fires in her forecastle. Her crew got the fires under control & she made her way to Kerama Retto at 5 knots 27/04/1945.
