Indianapolis Cruiser Torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-58, en route from Guam to Philippines, in Philippine Sea. Ship was hit twice in the starboard bow, causing a massive explosion. She capsized to starboard & sank bow first, 300 dead, 880 survivors 12.02N 134.48E 29/07/1945. Crew in water without lifeboats when rescued 316 survivors out of approximately 880 who had died of lack of water, food, exposure to the elements or shark attack 03/08/1945. Indianapolis had transported the enriched uranium atomic bomb Little Boy, which was later dropped on Hiroshima, departing Pearl Harbor 19/07/1945 arriving Tinian Island 26/07/1945
Callaghan Destroyer Sunk by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, 73 miles SW of Okinawa, whilst on picket radar duty. Kamikaze caused major flooding & fires that ignited her AA ammunition, which prevented other ships from approaching to help. She sank later, 47 dead 25.43N 126.55E 28/07/1945
Underhill Destroyer Escort Torpedoed by Japanese Kaitan human torpedo from submarine I-53, ENE of Luzon, in Philippine Sea. Ship had been diverted to deal with a floating Japanese mine, that turned out to be a dummy diversion tactic. Underhill then made sonar contact with I-53 & launched a depth charge attack along with submarine chaser PC-804. I-53 launched a Kaiten which then attacked Underhill. Underhill attempts to ram the Kaiten, but it hits Underhill on the port side under the bridge. Kaiten disintegrates in a massive explosion destroying the forward part of the ship from the bridge to the bow. The forward part of the ship broke away & quickly sank. After the crew had been rescued the stern section was sunk by gunfire from American sub-chases PC-803, PC-804 & PCE-872, 112 dead, 122 survivors 19.20N 126.42E 24/07/1945. I-53 escaped
Damaged Report
Porterfield Destroyer Damaged by gunfire from American warships during Japanese Kamikaze attack, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. One of her engines was knocked out 09/04/1945. Ship remained operational. Withdrawn for repair at Puget Sound Navy Yard 04/07/1945. Arrived for repair 24/07/1945
Prichett Destroyer Damaged by near miss by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, 73 miles SW of Okinawa, whilst on picket radar duty. She was attempting to help American warship Callaghan, when the Kamikaze missed then crashed into the sea off her port side. Her hull was seriously damaged by the bomb that the Kamikaze was carrying. Her port depth charge racks & superstructure was badly damaged, 25.43N 126.55E 29/07/1945
Thatcher Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, whilst in Buckner Bay, off S coast of Okinawa. Kamikaze slipped into the bay & attacked her at anchor. The aircraft bounced off the port side of the ship & crashed into the sea, 2 injured 19/07/1945. Ship remained operational, but she left for survey of her battle damage in the US. Arrived at Bremerton for survey 20/08/1945. Declared constructive total loss 23/11/1945
Cassin Young Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa. Kamikaze hit her starboard side amidships. Bomb exploded causing many fires & knocking out her engines. Crew were able to get one engine under control, put out the fires & get underway for Kerama Retto, 22 dead, 45 injured 28/07/1945
Rathburne Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze crashed into her port bow at the waterline. Kamikaze caused flooding, knocked out her sound gear & started fires in her forecastle. Her crew got the fires under control & she made her way to Kerama Retto at 5 knots 27/04/1945. Arrived for repair at San Diego 18/06/1945

Vestal Minesweeper Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, 55 miles SW of Puket Island, Thailand. Scuttled by gunfire from British warship Racehorse, 20 dead 07.05N 97.50E 26/07/1945
netherlands flag Lost Report
O 19 Submarine Aground on Ladd Reef, in South China Sea, 08.40N 111.40E 08/07/1945. Tow attempted by American submarine Cod, cable snaps 09/07/1945. Scuttled by torpedoes from Cod after further tow failed, crew & equipment taken off, crew taken to Fremantle 10/07/1945
brazil flag Lost Report
Bahia Cruiser Sunk by accidental explosion, off NE coast of Brazil. It is reported that during anti-aircraft target practice, crewmen firing a 20 mm gun accidently hit the stern of the ship & her depth charges. The resulting explosion knocked out all power & she sank in minutes, 339 dead crew, 4 American technicians, 36 survivors 00.00N 30.00W 04/07/1945. Survivors were picked up by freighter Balfe 08/07/1945

Haruna Battleship/Guardship Damaged by bomb from aircraft from American warship Ranger from Task Force 38, at anchor off Kure, bomb hit her on portside aft 24/07/1945. Bombed by aircraft from American warships Wasp & Shangri-La, at anchor 8 miles NW of Kure. Hit again on her portside. Flooding forces earlier damage under water & she sinks quickly in shallow water, next to a pier, 65 dead 34.15N 132.29E 28/07/1945
Hyuga Battleship/Guardship Damaged by bombs from aircraft from American warships Essex, Ticonderoga, Randolph, Hancock, Bennington, Monterey & Batann of Task Force 38, whilst at anchor off Nasake Jima, near Kure. Hit many times her stem & anchor deck was wrecked, bombs hitting her forebridge start a fire that eventually guts the interior of the ship. Burning ship begins to settle by the stern. 200+ dead, 600+ injured 34.12N 132.31E 24/07/1945. Progressive flooding settles her on an even keel 25/07/1945. Abandoned completely, crew remove all weapons & equipment that can be used 26/07/1945
Ise Battleship/Guardship Damaged by bombs from aircraft from American warships of Task Force 38, whilst at anchor at Ondo Seto. Bombs knock out No. 3 turret, destroys her bridge & causes flooding of her bow, 50 dead 24/07/1945. Emergency pumping gets her back on an even keel 27/07/1945. Bombed by aircraft from American warships Ticonderoga, Lexington & Hancock of Task Force 38, 5 miles NW of Kure. She sinks in shallow water 34.12N 132.31E 28/07/1945
Amagi Carrier Damaged by bombs from aircraft from American warships of Task Force 38, whilst at anchor & under repair at Kure Harbour. Bomb penetrated her flight deck & exploded 25' inside the ship. 200' of the flight deck bulged up, hanger walls blown out & forward aircraft elevator collapses. Her boiler rooms are flooded 24/07/1945. Damaged by bombs & near misses from aircraft from American warships of Task Force 38, whilst abandoned at anchor at Kure Harbour. Near misses accelerated flooding 28/07/1945. Bow of ship sank & grounded. Her bow was underwater she was listing to port with her starboard propeller exposed 29/07/1945

I-13 Submarine Damaged & forced to submerge by strafing & rockets from Grumman TBM Avenger aircraft from American warship Anzio, 550 miles E of Yokosuka, in the Pacific Ocean. Boat leaves a trail of oil when she dives. Avengers drop Mk 24 acoustic homing torpedo, but boat is confirmed sunk, when attacked by hedgehog bombs from American warship Lawrence C Taylor, 130 dead, 0 survivors 34.28N 150.55E 16/07/1945
