Gunfire knocked the Kamikaze aircraft down, but her bomb caused a power failure, that stopped her from moving her guns. Aaron Ward | Destroyer Minelayer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze released his bomb before striking the ship's superstructure aft, spreading fire & devastation across her decks. Bomb smashed through her hull below the waterline & exploded in her aft engine room. The explosion flooded her engine room, firerooms, ruptured fuel tanks, knocked out her steering & jammed her rudder hard left. She then turned a full circle slowing to 20 knots. She wasn't under proper control when she was attacked by another Kamikaze, which missed her bridge carried away her halyards & antennae, before smashing into her stack & crashing into the starboard side. Bomb from Japanese aircraft hit her port side, blowing a large hole in her side. This bomb knocked out her engines. She was hit by yet another bomb & then a final Kamikaze & bomb that hit her bridge area, blowing her funnel, searchlights & 2 gun mounts into the air 03/05/1945. After temporary repairs at Kerama Retto she departed for the US 11/06/1945. Because her damage was so servere she was decommissioned 28/09/1945 |
Shea | Destroyer Minelayer | Damaged by Japanese Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka piloted glider bomb Kamikaze strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. She was on radar picket duty when she was attacked. Ohka came in at tremendous speed hitting the ship on her starboard side bridge structure & exited her port side before exploding on the surface of the sea. Her communications & forward guns were disabled. With a 5 degree list to port she firstly transferred her injured to American transport ship Crescent City & removed her dead to Okinawa for burial, she limped into Kerama Retto anchorage for repair, 27 dead, 91 injured 04/05/1945.
