Kamikaze hit cut off all power & started gasoline fire, despite this she continued to fire on enemy aircraft. She was then hit by a Japanese Yokosuka P1Y Ginga Kamikaze aircraft strike. The impact from being hit by a bomber caused her to roll on her beam ends & sink in minutes, 158 dead, 52 injured 27.06N 127.38E 28/05/1945
Longshaw Destroyer Ran aground on Ose coral reef, S of Naha airfield, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. The tug Arikara arrived to tow her off the reef. It was at this point that Japanese shore batteries opened fire. The tug could not tow her off the reef. Enemy gunfire hit & exploded her forward magazine, blowing off her bow. She was then abandoned by her crew, 86 dead, 95 injured, 113 survivors 26.11N 126.37E 18/05/1945
Little Destroyer Sunk by 3 Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strikes, SW of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. She was on radar picket duty in company with American warship Aaron Ward when attacked. Ship was hit by 2 Aichi B3A1 Ryusei aircraft carrying bombs, hitting her amidships in quick succession. With all power knocked out she was hit by a third Kamikaze, that finally broke her back. Forward part of the ship sank quickly whilst the stern settled slowly 26.04N 126.25E 03/05/1945
Luce Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike causing power failure, unable to defend herself a second Kamikaze strike brought about her sinking, off Okinawa 149 dead 04/05/1945
Morrison Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa, Mitsubishi A6M Zero 'Zeke' aircraft hit the ship's bridge & funnel. Her electrical & communications systems were knocked out. She could not move & she was hit by 3 more Kamikaze aircraft, all old twin-float biplanes. Ship listed to starboard before an explosion lifted her bow into the air. She then quickly sank, 152 dead 27.10N 127.58E 04/05/1945
Lagarto Submarine Depth charged by Japanese warship Hatsutaka, in the Gulf of Thailand, 80 dead, 0 survivors 07.55N 102.00E 04/05/1945
Bates Transport Sunk by 2 Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strikes & 3 bombs, 2 miles S of le Shima Island, NW of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. First Kamikaze bomb hit her starboard side, before the Kamikaze itself crashed into the quaterdeck. Second Kamikaze struck her pilothouse, whilst the bomb from a third Kamikaze landed near her port side & explode opening up her hull. She was taken in tow by American Navy tug Cree. Ship was still blazing when she capsized & sank in 20 fathoms of water, 21 dead 26.41N 127.47E 25/05/1945
Barry Transport Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, 35 miles NW of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze struck her under the bridge where the bomb it was carrying exploded. Explosion set fire to her gasoline tanks & ignited Barry's ruptured fuel tanks. The fire threatened to spread to her forward magazine. Her crew abandoned her, leaving a skeleton crew 28 dead 26.30N 127.50E 25/05/1945. Fires were extinguished by her skeleton crew & parties from American warships Sims & Roper 26/05/1945. Towed to Kerama Retto, but found to be a constructive total loss. She was stripped of equipment & decommissioned. She was then towed out of Kerama Retto & moored, where she was used as a decoy for Japanese Kamikaze aircraft. She was struck again & sank 21/06/1945

South Dakota Battleship Damaged by internal explosion inside her No 2 turret whilst rearming at sea from supply ship Wrangell. The turrets magazine was flooded to put out fires, 11 dead, 24 injured 06/05/1945. Withdrawn for repair 11/05/1945
Bunker Hill Carrier Damaged by 2 Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero Kamikaze aircraft strikes & two 250 kg bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Bomb passed through the ship & into the sea, whilst Zero crashed into flight deck destroying aircraft & causing a huge fire ball. Second Kamikaze & bomb penetrated flight deck near the ship's island, causing a massive fire ball, 346 dead, 43 missing & 264 injured 11/05/1945
Enterprise Carrier Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa, her deck & forward elevator destroyed, explosion penetrated 6 decks, 14 dead, 34 injured, 14/05/1945
Birmingham Cruiser Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during invasion of Okinawa. Bomb carried by Kamikaze penetrated 3 decks before exploding. Explosion ripped hole in her starboard side below the waterline. Her armoury & 5" shell magazine were flooded 04/05/1945
Hugh W Hadley Destroyer Damaged by bomb from Japanese aircraft, 2 Kamikaze strikes & 1 Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka piloted glider bomb, off Okinawa. Despite many fires, flooding in her engineering space & being badly holed, her crew managed to keep her from sinking 11/05/1945. Ship was not repaired but decommissioned 15/12/1945
Stormes Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Nakajima Ki-44 Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze crashed into her stern torpedo mount, causing fires & flooding, 21 dead, 15 injured 25/05/1945. Arrived at Buckner Bay for repair, entering the floating dry dock for temporary repair 13/08/1945. Arrived for repair at Hunters Point 17/09/1945
Stanly Destroyer Damaged when during drill a 5" gun barrel of No 5 turret exploded, damaging her gun mount, in Ulithi lagoon, 2 dead 28/05/1945. Arrived at Apra Harbor for repair to gun mount 05/06/1945
Ingraham Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, N of Okinawa, during Battle of Okinawa. Ship was on radar picket duty when Kamikaze crashed into the ships' port side above the waterline. The bomb detonated in the generator room, 15 dead, 37 injured 05/05/1945
Douglas H Fox Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, NW of Okinawa, during Battle of Okinawa. Ship was on radar picket duty when she was attacked by a number of Kamikazes. She shot down 5 before being hit by one. Gasoline from one of her victims was set on fire. Her crew brought these fires under control & she was able to reach Kerama Retto for temporary repair under her own power, 7 dead, 35 injured 05/05/1945. Arrived at San Francisco 23/03/1945
Bache Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bombs, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze's wing struck the number 2 stack catapulting the plane down onto the main deck. Bombs exploded above the main deck, cutting all steam & electrical power, 42 dead, 32 injured 13/05/1945
Evans Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, 33 miles WNW of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Her engineering spaces were flooded & lost all power, 32 dead, 27 injured 26.58N 127.32E 11/05/1945. Not repaired
Thatcher Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Nakajima Ki-43 Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Batle of Okinawa. She was on radar picket duty when she was attacked. Kamikaze dived into the ship striking aft of the bridge, cutting all power, her steering & putting a 6' x 4' hole in her hull, 14 dead, 53 injured 20/05/1945. Arrived at Kerama Retto for repair 01/07/1945 - 13/07/1945. Declared constructive total loss
Luce Destroyer Damaged by bomb from Japanese Kamikaze attack, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Gunfire knocked the Kamikaze aircraft down, but her bomb caused a power failure, that stopped her from moving her guns. Second Kamikaze aircraft strike, knocked out her port engine, flooded her engineering space & jammed her rudder. She took on a heavy list to starboard, her crew abandoned ship, but a massive explosion as she sank killed many of her crew, 126 dead, 186 survivors 03/05/1945
Braine Destroyer Damaged by 2 Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strikes, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. First Kamikaze struck her bridge area. Second Kamikaze hit her second funnel, knocking it overboard & demolishing her superstructure 27/05/1945. Departed Kerama Retto for emergency repair 19/06/1945
Shubrick Destroyer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, 50 miles WNW of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. She was on radar picket duty when she was attacked. Kamikaze crashed into her, the bomb it was carrying blew a 30' hole in her starboard side, 35 dead, 25 injured 29/05/1945. Departed for US 15/07/1945. Arrived on one engine at Puget Sound Navy Yard 10/08/1945. On inspection by Bureau of Ships it was decided not to repair her
Sangamon Escort Carrier Damaged by Japanese Mitsubishi Zero Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, during the Battle of Okinawa. Bomb & part of the Zero penetrated flight deck and exploded in the hanger deck. After 3 hours the many fires were brought under control, 11 dead, 25 missing, 21 injured 04/05/1945
England Destroyer Escort Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze struck her starboard side, just below the bridge. The bomb exploded on impact & started a huge fire. Crew got the fire under control & she was towed to Kerama Retto, 37 dead, 25 injured 09/05/1945. Towed across Pacific Ocean arriving at San Diego 11/10/1945
Oberrender Destroyer Escort Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, W of Okinawa. Kamikaze struck her starboard side. Bomb penetrated into her forward fireroom & exploded, 24 dead 26.32N 127.20E 09/05/1945. Towed to Kerama Retto & decommissioned without repair 11/07/1945
Bright Destroyer Escort Damaged by Japanese Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero Kamikaze aircraft strike. Kamikaze struck her stern, flooded her engine room & jammed her rudder in a hard left turn. She circled for a hour whilst under attack by other Japanese aircraft 13/05/1945
O'Neill Destroyer Escort Damaged by near miss from Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze crashed into the sea nearby. She suffered shrapnel damage & gasoline fires, 2 dead, 17 injured 26/05/1945
Aaron Ward Destroyer Minelayer Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze released his bomb before striking the ship's superstructure aft, spreading fire & devastation across her decks. Bomb smashed through her hull below the waterline & exploded in her aft engine room. The explosion flooded her engine room, firerooms, ruptured fuel tanks, knocked out her steering & jammed her rudder hard left. She then turned a full circle slowing to 20 knots. She wasn't under proper control when she was attacked by another Kamikaze, which missed her bridge carried away her halyards & antennae, before smashing into her stack & crashing into the starboard side. Bomb from Japanese aircraft hit her port side, blowing a large hole in her side. This bomb knocked out her engines. She was hit by yet another bomb & then a final Kamikaze & bomb that hit her bridge area, blowing her funnel, searchlights & 2 gun mounts into the air 03/05/1945. After temporary repairs at Kerama Retto she departed for the US 11/06/1945. Because her damage was so servere she was decommissioned 28/09/1945
Shea Destroyer Minelayer Damaged by Japanese Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka piloted glider bomb Kamikaze strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. She was on radar picket duty when she was attacked. Ohka came in at tremendous speed hitting the ship on her starboard side bridge structure & exited her port side before exploding on the surface of the sea. Her communications & forward guns were disabled. With a 5 degree list to port she firstly transferred her injured to American transport ship Crescent City & removed her dead to Okinawa for burial, she limped into Kerama Retto anchorage for repair, 27 dead, 91 injured 04/05/1945. Depart from Ulithi for repair in the US 27/05/1945
Butler Minesweeper Damaged by bomb near misses from Japanese Kamikaze aircraft, SW of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Bomb exploding under the keel, cutting her steam lines, flooding her forward fire room she lost all steam & electrical power. American warship West Virginia stood nearby until she could get underway again, 9 dead 26.12N 127.50E 25/05/1945. Temporary repair at Kerama Retto 26/05/1945. Arrived for repair in USA 08/11/1945. Decommissioned without being repaired 08/11/1945

Chase Transport Damaged by bomb near miss from Japanese Kamikaze aircraft, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze crashed into the sea close by the ship. The bombs it was carrying exploded ripping her hull open & flooding her engine room & fire room. Her steering was jammed hard left & she was in danger of capsizing before her crew's efforts avoid this 20/05/1945. Towed across Pacific to San Diego arriving 11/10/1945. Decommissioned instead of being repaired 15/01/1946
Roper Transport Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa 22/05/1945. Arrived San Pedro for repair 06/1945. Decommissioned instead of being repaired 15/09/1945

Damaged by 2 Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strikes from Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero 'Zeke' first hit flight deck releasing 500 Ib bomb at same time damage to flight deck and knocking out 4.5" gun turret and lift motors & second hit failed to penetrate armoured flight deck but destroyed 4 Corsair aircraft on deck 3 dead, ship remained operational 09/05/1945. Withdrawn for repair 25/05/1945
Formidable Carrier Damaged by 2 Kamikaze strikes from Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero 'Zeke', first hit ship at junction between island & flight deck releasing 500 Ib bomb at same time, resulting in fire 8 dead & second hit failed to penetrate armoured flight deck, ship back in operation after 7 hours 04/05/1945. Damaged by Kamikaze strikes from Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero 'Zeke', failed to penetrate armoured flight deck, but resulted in the loss of 4 Avenger & 14 Corsair aircraft on deck, ship returned to operational status after fires were put out 09/05/1945
Indomitable Carrier Damaged by Kamikaze strike from Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero 'Zeke', skidded across armoured flight deck & 500 Ib bomb exploded alongside, ship remained operational 04/05/1945
Cavalier Destroyer Damaged by torpedo during torpedo firing exercise off Orkney Islands, torpedo struck ship & damaged bracket to port propeller. Starboard propeller was also damaged. She was towed to Scapa Flow for inspection 07/05/1945. Arrived for repaired at Rosyth 06/1945
Saumarez Destroyer Damaged by gunfire from Japanese warship Haguro, 55 miles WSW of Penang, in the Malacca Straits. Ship hit by three 8" shells during this action 16/05/1945. Arrived for repair at Simonstown Royal Dock Yard 06/06/1945
Quilliam Destroyer Damaged in collision with British warship Formidable, in fog as part of British Pacific Fleet. Her bows were crushed in collision. Towed by British warship Norman & later Black Prince towards Fleet Train 20/05/1945. Arrived Sydney for temporary repair 19/07/1945. Returned to UK for repair 08/1945
Terrapin Submarine Damaged by depth charges from Japanese escort, W of Batavia, in Java Sea. Boat had serious structural damage. She was able to surface after dark & escape 19/05/1945. Boat met with American submarine Cavalla, which then escorted her to Fremantle 21/05/1945. On inspection at Fremantle boat found to be constructive total loss
Prompt Minesweeper Damaged by mine off Ostend, Belgium the day after VE Day 09/05/1945. Ship towed to Southend & declared constructive total loss
