Ohka dived onto the ship at terrific speed & detonated 2,600 lb warhead amidships. Terrific explosion cracked her keel & destroyed her engineering spaces. She was then struck by a second Ohka. This one struck her on the starboard side amidships at the waterline. All her power, lights & communications were cut. She broke in 2 & sank, 79 dead 27.15.00N 126.30.00E 12/04/1945 |
Pringle | Destroyer | Sunk by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bombs, 72 miles of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Ship was on radar picket duty when she was attacked. Kamikaze crashed into her bridge & through her deck. Bombs from the Kamikaze penetrated her decks & exploded, buckling her keel & breaking her in 2 before sinking, 65 dead, 258 survivors 16/04/1945 |
William D Porter | Destroyer | Damaged by near miss from Japanese Aichi D3A 'Val' Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze missed the ship crashing into the sea beside the ship & exploded under her. Underwater explosion lifted the ship out of the water before dropping it back down, causing extensive structural damage, fires, loss of power & flooding. Her crew battled for 3 hours before she was abandoned. She heeled over to starboard & sank by the stern 10/04/1945 |
Bush | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, N of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze struck the ship on the starboard side at deck level between her funnels. Bomb exploded in the engine room. Second Kamikaze crashed into her port side opposite the first hit. Her ammunition caught fire & exploded. Eventually she came apart amidships & sank, 87 dead, 227 survivors 27.16N 127.48E 06/04/1945 |
Colhoun | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike & bomb, N of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa, whilst assisting American warship Bush. Kamikaze wiped out a 40 mm gun mount & scattered burning aircraft across the ship. Bomb exploded in aft fireroom. Her steering was knocked out & she was using emergency steering. Second Kamikaze & bomb struck her starboard side, the bomb exploded deep inside the ship, damaging both boilers, ripping a 20' x 4' hole below her waterline & breaking her keel. A third Kamikaze & bomb struck her stern whilst the bomb went into the sea close by, where it exploded making a 3' hole in her hull. A fourth Kamikaze struck her bridge causing massive fires. Her crew tried to save her, but she began to list over & had to be abandoned. She was sunk by gunfire from American warship Cassin Young, 34 dead, 21 injured 27.16N 127.48E 06/04/1945 |

Aircraft dived onto ship hit the aft mast & landing on the roof of No. 3 turret. Small fuel fire was put out quickly, but the AA gun mount on the turret was destroyed. Bomb was deflected off the armoured roof of the turret, 53 dead 07/04/1945. Withdrawn for repair & refit 14/04/1945 |
Tennessee | Battleship | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze Aichi Ryusei aircraft strike & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Ship was on anti-aircraft patrol when she was attacked. Kamikaze was hit by gunfire from ship & smoking, but it still managed to hit the ships signal bridge. The Kamikaze slid along the ships' superstructure until it stopped by her No 3 turret, 22 dead, 107 injured 12/04/1945. Crew undertook emergency repairs which were completed by 14/04/1945. Her mast & radar were destroyed as were numerous 20 mm and 40 mm gun mounts, 32 dead, 41 injured 14/051945. Arrived under tow at anchorage off Okinawa for temporary repair 17/04/1945. Arrived at Saipan 27/04/1945. Arrived Seattle 24/05/1945. Damaged in collision in thick fog with American patrol boat PC-815 during working up exercise 11/09/1945 |

Zellars | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Nakajima B6N2 Tenzan Kamikaze aircraft & bomb, whilst screening American warship Tennessee, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Kamikaze was one of three. The first two were shot down, but the third got through & hit the ship forward of the bridge penetrating as far as the No 2 magazine handling room. The 500 Kg bomb it was carrying tore through several bulkheads before detonating in the scullery on the starboard side. The ship lost all power before her crew could get her underway again. She managed to shoot down another attacking Kamikaze before she was able to get underway & limped into Kerama Retto 02/04/1945. Arrived for repair at Terminal Island, CA 01/06/1945 |
Hutchins | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze boat attack W of Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Small fast boat slipped through the formation of American warships undetected, before dropping a large explosive charge close to Hutchins' hull. Explosion severely damaged her hull, but there were no injuries & damage control parties brought her flooding under control 26.14N 127.49E 11/04/1945 |
Stanly | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka Kamikaze rocket plane, whilst on picket patrol off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Ship had been under attack from 6 Aichi D3A Ryusei Kamizake aircraft before the Ohka, travelling at 500 miles an hour dived onto her. She was hit on her starboard side at the bow 5 feet above the waterline. The warhead passed through the ship before exploding in the sea. Within minutes of this first attack a second Ohka near missed her, carrying away her mast head flag before crashing into the sea. The ship then survived a second near miss from a Mitsubishi Zero Kamikaze aircraft. In the evening she arrived at Kerama Retto for repair, 3 injured 12/04/1945. Withdraw for repair at Ulithi 05/05/1945 |

Day | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft near miss & bomb, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Gunfire from the ship crashed the Kamikaze into the sea off the ships' port beam. The bomb it was carrying exploded showering the ship in splinters, 3 dead, 16 injured 18/04/1945. Arrived to repair at Kerama Retto 32/04/1945 |

Kamikaze aircraft delivered a glancing blow to Newcomb's bridge, before plunging onto the Leutze, nearly cutting off her stern. Kamikaze bomb hit Leutze's port quarter. Ship was disabled & suffered serious flooding aft, 8 dead, 30 injured 06/04/1945. Ship towed to Kerama Retto, but sank stern first on arrival. She was raised & departed for Pearl Harbor via Guam 10/07/1945. Arrived for repair at Hunters Point, San Francisco 03/08/1945 |

Despite being hit by gunfire from Bryant the Kamikaze struck the ship just below the bridge area into the main radio room. The bomb exploded engulfing the bridge in flames, knocking out her communications, fire-control & radar equipment. Crew got her fires under control & she could make 23 knots. She then limped to Kerama Retto for temporary repair, 34 dead, 33 injured 16/04/1945. Departed Kerama Retto for US 27/04/1945. Arrived for repair at San Francisco 28/05/1945. Newcomb | Destroyer | Damaged by 4 Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. First Kamikaze struck her aft funnel, damaging her boilers & she lost steam. Second Kamikaze & bomb struck her amidships, destroying her torpedo workshop & the warheads of torpedoes stored there exploded, causing extensive damage and a huge fire. Third Kamikaze & bomb struck the forward stack, spraying her amidships with burning fuel. The bomb it was carrying, crashed through her superstructure & fell into the sea without exploding. Fourth Kamikaze & bomb, dealt a glancing blow to her bridge, before plunging onto the stern of American warship Leutze, 43 dead, 65 injured 06/04/1945. Kamikaze came in as a group of 6 aircraft. One got through & struck the ship high up on her foremast. Bomb exploded in mid-air, 1 dead, 1 injured 12/04/1945 |
Gregory | Destroyer | Damaged by Japanese Kamikaze aircraft strike, off Okinawa, during the Battle of Okinawa. Despite gunfire from Gregory hitting & spinning the Kamikaze it still hit her port side amidships, just above the waterline. Ship suffered power failure & flooding as forward engine room & fire rooms flooded. Crew managed to get her underway again anchor at Kerama Retto 08/04/1945. Temporary repair at Kerama Retto before departing for the US 19/04/1945 |
